How to Pair Prints Together

One of the biggest questions I get when talking about my print shop is how I pair prints together.

I get that it can be overwhelming or make you feel really indecisive! Especially when it comes to thinking about the print, the size, the frame, and then the placement or arrangement.

Many of my photos in the print shop are taken in a similar light and can be paired together nicely, but there are a few things to consider when pairing prints together for a gallery wall or a photo display in your home.

I’ve outlined 4 of my top tips below!
1. Decide on colors that would go well in your home.

I also mentioned the importance of color when talking about creating a gallery wall, and the same concept rings true here.

The tones throughout my home are very alike (it’s all made up of coastal hues, go figure!) but you should ask yourself a few questions when choosing prints that compliment your home. Here are some important things to think about:

  • Where do you plan on hanging them?
  • What is the color of the wall?
  • What is the color of the furniture and items around it?
  • What aesthetic are you going for?
    • If you choose prints with more of the sunset vibe you may have more color in your home.  If you choose more of the muted tones and natural feel of the coast, you may have more natural colors in your house.

2. Focus on the groupings and the place you will hang.

It tends to be a rule of design, and is also my personal preference!

3. Narrow down the medium.

Next, ask yourself, do you want your prints framed? Or do you prefer them on canvas? Or maybe you like a mixture of both?

Consider the style of frames you will hang and whether they will be the same or different. Whether they match or not is really up to you!

You can find more helpful tips on where I buy frames in this post here.

4. Choose prints that compliment each other and tell a story.

Lastly, you want to choose images that pair nicely together and somewhat make sense. They should tell a “story”, and not be so distinctly different that they don’t feel cohesive.

Here are a few image collections that I recommend from my Soul of the Sea Print Shop:

Collection 1 – Tulum Tranz

Collection 2 – OBX DAZE

Collection 3 – Coastal Soul

What do you think? What would you pair together? I always love seeing and hearing about new combinations!
