Wedding photography is about so much more than just showing up and capturing moments for couples.
There is a lot that goes into running a photography business, serving clients, and creating an incredible experience for them.
While it may seem expensive to hire a photographer at first glance, it’s worth every penny when you choose one that’s the perfect fit for you.
There are a lot of factors that go into your investment and knowing which photographer is right for you, so I thought it would be helpful to break out a few of them.
Although some photographers have a natural knack for it, the good ones spend a good amount of time and money perfecting their craft.
They value ongoing learning and strive to grasp new techniques, technologies, marketing tools, and ways of enhancing the client experience.
To put it simply: If you aren’t learning you aren’t growing.
Education comes at a price, even for photography courses. It can be like taking college courses all over again, as they take time and focus to work through and then implement.
Each year, I usually budget an allotted amount to either learn from online courses or in-person workshops. These can cost anywhere from $1,000-$2,500.
These can, of course, run higher in some cases but this a general gauge. Like I said, it’s not cheap!
When I look at doing a few a year, times the number of years I’ve been in business, we’re talking about a healthy chunk of hard earned money!
But I feel it’s worth it to stay on top of my game and ensure I’m providing the best possible end result for my couples.
Let’s face it, photography gear isn’t cheap either! Quality gear comes at top dollar and is always changing and improving.
Add wear and tear into the equation, and you end up with gear that has to be upgraded and replaced every so often.
Hands-on experience is everything when it comes to wedding photography.
Every single wedding or event teaches you something new. I, for one, have learned so much on the job!
Experience creates trust between photographer and client, which is priceless to have on a day as important as your wedding day!
Cost of Business
Y’all, running a business in general is expensive, too! Regardless of what kind of business you own, you have to spend money to make money. That’s the name of the game!
From my gear to continued education, to the day-to-day of running my website, marketing expenses, accounting, legal…I could go on and on.
So in order to grow, my pricing has to reflect the cost of doing business.
My heart has grown bigger and bigger the longer I’ve had this business. The stories, the connections, and the hearts of the people I work with have made me so grateful to be able to do what I do!
I pour my heart & soul into giving my couples the best possible experience.
I give all the knowledge I have to my clients, in order to better equip them to get the most out of their wedding photography.
I worked hard this off-season to craft content that enables my newly booked clients to plan their timeline more efficiently, get ready for their engagement session, and learn tips and tricks for getting all the shots they envision.
This is precisely why I created the Bridal Beach!
This means late nights building resources, developing content, crafting valuable blog posts, and writing captions to share with my couples and those who follow me.
It all takes time, effort, trial and error, and a whole lot of HEART.
At least from my perspective, my business isn’t just a transaction where I get paid, do the job, and that’s that.
I’m in this because I care about giving more and being more for my couples. I really value the relationship I get to develop with the couples that I serve.
Years beyond the wedding, we keep in touch and I get to follow them through life!
So next time you wonder why professional photography can feel like such an investment, you know it’s because photographers like me are invested in you!
